Ryan is a technologist whose passion for progressive change led him on a journey of discovery to understanding the role digital can play in organizing and campaigning. Working to mobilize people for cancer control, democratic reform, climate change, social justice, and anti-slavery causes, Ryan has helped organization bridge technology to help execute their theory of change. HIs approach is grounded in the ethos of people power: that at the right time, with the right people, and with the right tools, big systemic change is possible.
After serving as Technical Director for organizations like Leadnow, and WalkFree, Ryan was inspired to build Grassriots as a place where talented people could bring their passion, enthusiasm and expertise to social sectors organizations. Ryan hopes to continue to shape Grassriots as a place where innovation thrives and talent is built that is committed to building a better nonprofit sector.
Leah has a wide range of communications and campaign experience, and has led the development and execution of strategic & communications plans, on municipal, provincial, national and international levels. Throughout her career, Leah’s focus has been working with clients to influence social change and brings over 15 years of campaign strategy to our team.
Her Masters Degree focused on facilitation and strategic decision making within the nonprofit sector. She has worked across issues – with a primary focus on anti racism education, Indigenous Rights, Climate Justice and the intersections of those issues within the electoral and social justice spheres. Most recently, Leah was a director for Naomi Klein’s Climate Justice organization, The Leap which serves as a strategic advisor to organizations including Sunrise, Fight for $15 and Fairness, Justice Democrats, Momentum, and the Migrant Rights Network.
A nonprofit sector veteran, Ryann Miller has been supporting purpose-driven organizations for nearly two decades. Ryann is committed to helping nonprofits leverage the power of digital and multichannel marketing, advocacy, fundraising and engagement in order to thrive.
As Director of Partnerships at Grassriots, Ryann is often the first point of contact with organizations, supporting strategic decisions about a client’s needs and objectives and aligning them with the ideal teams at Grassriots to leverage strengths, develop years-long relationships and co-create projects that transform organizations and the missions they serve.
Kelly Small is an award-winning creative director, designer, and writer with deep roots in communication design, marketing, and advertising, and a special focus on ethical and inclusive creative practice. A proven creative leader, strategist, and affiliated design researcher with Emily Carr University, Kelly holds a master’s degree in design where their research focused on design ethics, social impact, social innovation, and sustainability. Kelly received the Governor General’s academic gold medal for their graduate work.
A seasoned ad-industry expat, Kelly has experience leading major brands across most sectors including automotive, CPG, entertainment, finance, retail, technology, telecom, and more. Currently serving as executive creative director at Grassriots Inc., Kelly is committed to applying their 15+ years of commercial experience to exclusively supporting progressive, impact-focused clients. Kelly is equally passionate about breakthrough aesthetics and innovative creative executions as they are ensuring that their concepts provide real, measurable results.
Kelly’s book, The Conscious Creative: Practical Ethics for Purposeful Work, is a guide to mindfulness and ethical creative practice in support of holistic work toward dismantling oppressive systems of power. It is a collection of over 100 actions for change-making within a professional context and is the culmination of Kelly’s research in their pursuit of a more humane, values-driven and inclusive creative industry.
